One of the highest honors that The Wilderness Center gives to members and volunteers is its annual Distinguished Service Awards presented at the annual meeting of the members. This year, there were three recipients of the award, and all three are members of The Wilderness Center Astronomy Club.
Gene Rickenbrode was recognized for his volunteer activities in many areas, from building inspection to the education program to the newsletter crew. Gene is a frequent participant in our public nights and outreaches, and he has been invaluable in telescope and building maintenance at the AEB.
John Waechter was recognized for his efforts as our Observatory Coordinator and as Outreach Coordinator. He takes great pleasure in sharing his love of the universe with anyone. John has been responsible for the look of our HORIZON newsletter for many years. He has done many custom printing jobs for the Club and for TWC. He has taken on a number of other printing jobs for TWC and often has been able to get donated or discounted materials.
Dave Ross was recognized for his efforts as Planetarium Coordinator for the Fred Silk Planetarium. He is responsible for the hardware maintenance and upgrading for the planetarium and for scheduling our programming. He arranges the training of our volunteer presenters. He developed two of our favorite programs, "Shadows of the Night" and "Wonderful Star". Dave has also led telescope making workshops for the public and Canton City Schools, and has taken the lead in many observatory issues.
The Club has been thrice blessed with the friendship of these three, and we salute them on their well-deserved honor.
